The remarkable improvement of the superconducting properties of polycr
ystalline BSCCO(2223) when processed into Ag-clad tapes has been studi
ed magnetically. Two factors contribute to the excellent tape performa
nce: Over the investigated range of field and temperature, the grain b
oundaries show no evidence of being 'weak-links'. Also, intragranular
flux pinning is much stronger than might be expected from single cryst
al data, and appears to determine the tape critical current.
