In surgical outpatients who required immobilization with a plaster cas
t because of injury to the lower limb a deep vein thrombosis occurred
in 14%. General thromboprophylaxis seems advisable for surgical outpat
ients and depends on the severity of trauma and thrombosis risk factor
s. In a study of 97 patients who received a daily subcutaneous injecti
on of heparin fragment calcium throughout their cast period, only one
patient with a deep vein thrombosis was seen.
