The reactor study of Hagenson and Krakowski demonstrated the attractiv
eness of the spheromak as a compact fusion reactor, based on physics p
rinciples confirmed in CTX experiments in many respects. Most uncertai
n was the energy confinement time and the role of magnetic turbulence
inherent in the concept. In this paper, a one-dimensional model of hea
t confinement, calibrated by CTX, predicts negligible heat loss by mag
netic turbulence at reactor scale.
