THE EFFECT PPI IN VENEZUELA, 1990-1995

The Venezuelan ''Programa de Promocion del Investigador (PPI)'', a pro gram for promotion of scientific research, was started in 1990. The st eady increase in the number of scientific publications from Venezuela since 1990 in journals of highest impact was considered in Pericchi (1 994). Here we give a brief summary of the results presented there, and provide further analyses and evidence of this positive effect on the scientific production at the highest international level in Venezuela. Furthermore, we give some data on the ''Effect PPI'' '' in one Venezu elan Institution, Universidad Simon Bolivar. We end up with some concl usions and remarks based on the diagnosis that the PPI, has produced a bout the situation of science in Venezuela.
