This paper includes an overview of ecological studies conducted since
1986 in the Ratanica pine-beech forested catchment located in the poll
uted, high populated southern part of Poland. General characteristics
of the catchment (including soil and vegetation, air pollution, input/
output of nutrients and pollutants, element budget data and forest hea
lth assessment) are presented. Based on biogeochemical and bioindicati
on results, the Ratanica catchment has been classified as a moderately
to heavily deteriorated area. Predictions for this forested catchment
for various deposition of anthropogenic pollutants, are also disscuse
