The structure and absolute configuration of cardionidine, C21H25O5N, w
ere determined by X-ray diffraction analysis. It crystallizes in the s
pace group P2(1), with a = 8.499(1) Angstrom, b = 9.494(2) Angstrom, p
= 10.918(2) Angstrom, beta = 101.38(2)degrees and D-X = 1.42 g cm(-3)
for Z = 2. The molecular structure is based on a heptacyclic skeleton
of a C-20 diterpenoid alkaloid of the atisine type, hetisine subtype,
featuring an unusual anhydride function. Bond lengths and angles are
in the usual range.
