The techniques of selectively-detected fluorescence excitation and dis
persed fluorescence spectroscopy have been used to characterize the (0
,2) band of the [18.3](8) Sigma(-)-X(8) Sigma(-) transition and the (1
,0), (0,0), and (0,1) bands of the [15.8](8) Sigma(-)-X(8) Sigma(-) tr
ansition of (GdF)-Gd-156. The effective spin-spin and spin-rotation co
nstants (in cm(-1)) for the ground X(8) Sigma(-) state (v '' = 2) are
lambda '' = -0.181 38, gamma '' = 9.79 x 10(-4) and for the [18.3](8)
Sigma(-) state (v' = 0) are lambda' = -3.279, gamma' = -9.47 x 10(-3),
which are consistent with 4f(7)[S-8](6)s(2) and 4f(7)[S-8]5d6s config
urational assignments, respectively. Five (0,0) bands of an extensive
Delta Lambda = +1 system in the near infrared region were analyzed and
assigned as a i(4f(7)[S-8]5d(2)[F-3])-a(10)Delta(4f(7)[S-8]5d6s) tran
sition. Five (0,0) subbands of a Delta Lambda = 0 transition in the vi
sible region were analyzed and assigned as a a(4f(7)[S-8]5d(2)[F-3])-a
(10)Delta(4f(7)[S-8]5d6s) transition. Using a semiempirical ligand fie
ld model, all observed states were assigned to one of the three lowest
energy superconfigurations of GdF: 4f(7)6s(2), 4f(7)5d6s, and 4f(7)5d
(2). (C) 1996 Academic Press, Inc.
