Abstract
Ruthenium tetroxide generated in situ under the Sharpless conditions w as applied to different hydrocarbons containing cyclopropane groups ei ther spiroanellated or ring-fused. In all cases oxidation occurred exc lusively at the positions alpha to the cyclopropyl group to give keton es. Ring cleavage was observed when such positions were tertiary.
