A new crown hydroxamic acid (NHDTAHA) is used for the extraction and s
pectrophotometric determination of vanadium (V). The molar absorptivit
y is 2.5 x 10(4) 1 mol(-1) cm(-1) at 395 nm and the system obeys Beer'
s law over the range 0.05-3.0 ppm of vanadium. For ICP-AES measurement
s, the extract can be directly aspirated, which enhances the sensitivi
ty 25-fold and the limits for estimation are 2-120 ppb of vanadium. Va
nadium has been determined in ores, steel, environmental and biologica
l samples.
