Abstract
A comparative study of three new selective and differential cultural m edia, called XLT(4), Rambach and SMID, has been carried out in order t o evaluate their effectiveness for the isolation of Salmonella spp. fr om 272 food samples of animal origin. XLT(4) has shown to be the best cultural medium because, besides giving excellent results like the oth er two kinds of agar during the isolation of such microorganisms, it r educes considerably the problem of ''false positives'' and identifies as Salmonella the 96.9% of the suspect colonies.
