USING POLLUTION PREVENTION TOOLS FOR COMPLIANCE IN THE FEDERAL COMMUNITY

In addition to environmental laws, Federal facilities must comply with Presidential Executive Orders, such as Executive Order 12856 which re quires Federal facilities to put policies and practices in place in th eir environmental programs which emphasize pollution prevention as the alternative of ''first choice'' for how they will (1) achieve complia nce with new regulations and requirements; (2) ensure compliance with existing regulations and requirements; and (3) return to compliance wh en violations are identified. This article identifies major environmen tal laws and executive orders affecting Federal facilities and present s demonstrated pollution prevention techniques and tools that will hel p Federal facilities with the environmental challenges while meeting m ission objectives.
