Abstract
The exploitation of fibre technology within the access network will br ing not only opportunities for new services, in particular broadband s ervices, but also opportunities for increased quality of service - fas ter service provision, flexible bandwidth assignment, increased reliab ility and immunity to major network node and link failures. This paper describes some of the options for the longer term that could realise these network advantages by exploiting advanced optical technology.
