Abstract
This paper reviews some of the advances made at BT Laboratories in the field of photosensitive optical fibres and devices. Recent work on un derstanding the mechanisms contributing to the phenomenon and its appl ications are presented. The area of research is likely to have a profo und impact on telecommunications.
