The present investigation deals with the preparation and evaluation of
tinctures from leaves of Gymnema sylvestre. Tinctures of the leaves w
ere prepared from different strengths of alcohol by maceration for 10,
20 and 30 days. The tinctures prepared have been characterized on the
basis of their specific gravity, pH, colour, solid matter content per
100 ml Tincture prepared with 30% v/v alcohol and on 30 days of macer
ation showed a maximum solid content of 2.789% (w/v) and showed pH 5.9
. This tincture was studied for its chemical constituents, thin-layer
chromatographic, and spectroscopic behaviour.
