The completely sequenced genome of Haemophilus influenzae has been ana
lysed for proteins of the phosphoenolpyruvate :sugar phosphotransferas
e system (PTS). We show that within the fructose PTS H. influenzae pos
sesses a novel multi-domain phosphoryl transfer protein. not previousl
y recognized, that includes two fructose-specific HPr domains fused in
tandem in a single polypeptide chain.
