Abstract
A new methodology has been developed based on infrared (IR) and nuclea r magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopic techniques Sor the quantitati on of various components in rolling oils without their prior separatio n. The IR method makes use of a curve-fitting approach in which the mu lticomponent mixtures with overlapping bands can be quantified without exhibiting isolated characteristic frequencies for each component. Pr ior information about the nature and type of the components in the mix ture is the basic requirement for this method. NMR methodology involve s the direct identification and quantitation of various components fro m their characteristic H-1, C-13 and P-31-NMR chemical shift data. Bot h IR and NMR techniques have been successfully applied to nine compone nt blends and commercial oils.
