In this paper, we model the effects of optical interference on the emi
ssion properties of conjugated polymer thin films and devices. The inf
luence of dielectric interfaces and metal surfaces on the radiative li
fetime of the singlet exciton is investigated in a number of multi-lay
er structures. We find that changing the structure can have a signific
ant effect on the radiative lifetime, and we discuss the effect of thi
s change on the emission spectrum as well as the measured photolumines
cence efficiency. We compare the results of our model with the results
of photoluminescence experiments using a number of structures.
