The authors report the observation of an alcoholic patient admitted fo
r tetanic manifestations, in whom severe hypocalcaemia associated with
hyperphosphatemia were suggestive of hypoparathyroidism. Administrati
on of magnesium supplementation alone improved the clinical features a
nd led to the correction of the calcium abnormalities. The mechanisms
of hypomagnesemia in alcohol intoxication are reviewed as well as the
links with hypocalcaemia.
