Ro. Delagarza et al., WILL THE REAL AMERICANS PLEASE STAND UP - ANGLE AND MEXICAN-AMERICAN SUPPORT OF CORE AMERICAN POLITICAL VALUES, American journal of political science, 40(2), 1996, pp. 335-351
Theory: Ethnic civic incorporation theory provides three hypotheses in
regard to immigrants' adopting American values (i.e., incorporation).
Hypotheses: (1) Mexican-Americans will become incorporated as they ac
culturate regardless of ethnic consciousness. (2) Mexican-Americans wi
ll not incorporate regardless of acculturation or ethnic consciousness
. (3) Greater ethnic consciousness will reduce civic incorporation. Me
thods: Multiple regression analysis is done on a national survey of Me
xican-Americans. Results: At all levels of acculturation, Mexican-Amer
icans are no less likely and often more Likely to endorse values of in
dividualism and patriotism than are Angles. This finding has implicati
ons for the current debates on immigration and efforts to discriminate
against immigrants.
