The Purpose of this paper is to discuss the importance of careful rheo
logy control in the formulation of aqueous paints and to explain how m
odern rheology modifiers can be used to achieve that control. The pape
r will first review in simple terms the very basic classifications of
rheological behaviour and then review traditional thickener types. Mod
ern rheology modifiers will be discussed and finally the different typ
es will be compared and contrasted from a practical viewpoint.
