Abstract
Movements in the gross domestic product (GDP) per capita of English an d Welsh counties and Scottish regions are examined to test whether the counties and regions are converging in terms of GDP per capita. The e xercise is carried out for the period 1977 to 1991 and for six sub-per iods. Although there is no evidence of convergence over the whole peri od there is some evidence of convergence within certain sub-periods. T hese are periods when the economy as a whole is growing slowly.
