Abstract
A comprehensive analytical approach towards scalar and vectorial type- II interaction in cascaded second-order nonlinearities is presented. T he analytical results can be used to optimise the configuration to obt ain a certain phase shift with minimum power requirements. In particul ar, the analysis indicates that the vectorial interaction process is m ore efficient and that all-optical switches which are based on Mach-Ze hnder interferometers may be operated with switching powers in the mW- region provided one uses an unbalanced input.
