P. Podwojewski et E. Bourdon, THE INDURATION PROCESS OF GOETHITIC OXISO LS ON PERIDOTITES IN NEW-CALEDONIA - A SINGULAR PLINTHITE-TYPE PROCESS OF INDURATION, Comptes rendus de l'Academie des sciences. Serie II. Sciences de la terre et des planetes, 322(6), 1996, pp. 453-459
The strong chemical weathering of peridotites in New Caledonia generat
es goethitic oxisols acid a karstic relief. A rapid decrease of a wate
r-table at the bottom of a doline leads to a rapid, massive and contin
uous induration of iron oxide at the interface between an oxidizing an
d a reducing environment. Goethite precipitates in a reticular network
, pseudomorphs after plant cells and could be associated with lepidocr
ocite, siderite and rhodochrosite. These hardpans could not be strictl
y considered as ferricretes.
