A molecular approach is utilized to evaluate the Frank elastic constan
ts for discotic nematic liquid crystals, by utilizing the Maier-Saupe
approximation. By choosing a suitable geometry for the interaction vol
ume, the results are analysed in a lyotropic nematic context. It is sh
own that the elastic constants depend on the micellar-shape anisotropy
defined as the ratio between the micellar diameter and the bilayer th
ickness.
