Abstract
A general purpose automated design procedure, based on a modified comp lex method of Box, for the optimal design of plane frames with variabl e geometry (joint locations) and discrete member size, selected from s pecified tables of member cross-sections, is presented. Members are si zed on the basis of allowable stress design procedure, and the design satisfies all the relevant provisions of the AISC Specification. The c omputer program allows the linking of members as well as joints. The c apabilities of the method are illustrated by three examples. Copyright (C) 1996 Elsevier Science Ltd.
