Abstract
The objective of this study is to document the characteristics of cita tions in French and German fine arts monographs. Three hundred ninety citations were randomly selected from 155 monographs published between 1982 and 1990 and indexed in the Repertoire international de la litte rature de l'art (RILA). Citations were classified as to source type; p rimary or secondary source; language; date; and the author's motivatio n for making the citation. While books are the principal source cited, manuscripts are more heavily cited than in most humanities fields. Th e greatest number of citations is to works published in the last twent y years, but there is a more even distribution of citations to earlier decades than in most disciplines.
