The vacuum structure of QCD in an external chromo-electric field is in
vestigated within the continuum space-time formulation of perturbative
QCD and the extended Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, used as a low-energy a
pproximation of QCD. We show that the density of dynamical quark-antiq
uark pairs decreases with increasing external chromoelectric field str
ength. These results are compared with recent numerical simulations of
lattice QCD which indicate restoration of chiral symmetry in the vici
nity of a static color source.
