The double-differential cross section for the inclusive double-charge-
exchange (DCX) reaction O-16(pi(-), pi(+))X is measured for the first
time at energies T-0 = 600 and 750 MeV and angle similar to 5 degrees
in the outgoing-pion-momentum region where additional-pion production
is kinematically forbidden. Comparison with available inclusive data a
t lower energy shows that the cross section for the DCX reaction on O-
16 slowly decreases with energy and does not exhibit a fast fall for T
-0 > 500 MeV, as is expected for the mechanism of sequential single ch
arge exchange. This indicates that other reaction mechanisms associate
d, for example, with short-range NN correlations in nuclei can contrib
ute in this energy region.
