Abstract
It is shown that the contribution delta alpha(W) of the W-boson loop t o <(alpha) over bar> depends on the gauge parameter xi. The cases of t he Feynman and Landau gauges (xi = 1 and xi = 0, respectively) are tre ated separately. The imaginary part of the polarization operator is co nsidered as a function of the gauge parameter. It is verified that phy sical quantities (such as m(Z)(2) and the amplitude of heavy-lepton sc attering) are independent of the gauge parameter xi.
