Using very fine (< 2 mu m) AlB2, alpha-AlB12, Al3B48C2 and Al8B4C7 pow
ders synthesized from simple substances a study is made of the oxidati
on of aluminum borides and borocarbides in air and liquid reagents. Th
eir microhardness and electrical conductivity are measured using hot-p
ressed specimens. In order of decreasing reducibility the boron-contai
ning aluminum phases are placed as follows: AlB2-Al8B4C7-B-AlB12-Al3B4
8C2. In AlB12 and Al3B48C2 specimens after high-temperature annealing
their electrical conductivity increases and the effect of Mott conduct
ivity is revealed.
