The real structure of flame-sprayed chromium coatings in the as-spraye
d state and after exposure to friction has been studied by means of el
ectron microscopy, local x-ray spectrum analysis, and Auger electron s
pectroscopy. The surface layers of the coating were found to become sa
turated with oxygen under friction and secondary structures with a hig
h defect content formed in those layers, The most stable structures we
re highly disperse fragmented states formed on the basis of the initia
l grains as a result of deformation.
