We performed line profile measurements of the 2s-2p resonance transiti
ons in B III in order to test quantum-mechanical (close-coupling) theo
ry. The experiment was carried out using the well-diagnosed gas-liner
pinch discharge where plasma parameters are determined independently b
y 90 degrees Thomson scattering. The experimental Stark widths are abo
ut twice the five-state close-coupling results. However, we find good
agreement with semiclassical calculations in the electron-impact appro
ximation.
