Abstract
A nematic liquid crystalline cell utilizing a substrate coated with po lyvinylcinnamate was subjected to UV polarized light in the presence o f a magnetic field. After removing the cell from the field it was foun d that the pretilt angle was large and both temporally and thermally r obust. Irradiation in the absence of a field resulted in a rapid decay of the pretilt angle to zero, corresponding to planar alignment. (C) 1996 American Institute of Physics.
