Y. Reznikov et al., MAGNETIC FIELD-MEDIATED ALIGNMENT OF A NEMATIC LIQUID-CRYSTAL AT A POLYMER SURFACE-EXPOSED TO ULTRAVIOLET-LIGHT, Applied physics letters, 68(16), 1996, pp. 2201-2203
A nematic liquid crystalline cell utilizing a substrate coated with po
lyvinylcinnamate was subjected to UV polarized light in the presence o
f a magnetic field. After removing the cell from the field it was foun
d that the pretilt angle was large and both temporally and thermally r
obust. Irradiation in the absence of a field resulted in a rapid decay
of the pretilt angle to zero, corresponding to planar alignment. (C)
