A dinuclear oxovanadium(IV) complex with 2,6-bis(salicylideneaminometh
yl)-4-methy (H(3)L), [(VO)(2)(L)-(CH3O)(dmso)] (1) (dmso = dimethyl su
lfoxide), has been synthesized and characterized by infrared and elect
ronic spectra, and by the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptib
ilities (80-300 K). The molecular structure of 1 was determined by sin
gle-crystal X-ray structure analysis. The two octahedral vanadium ions
are bridged by a phenoxo-oxygen of L, a methoxo ion, and a dimethyl s
ulfoxide and have syn oxo configuration. The magnetic property was dis
cussed in relation to the crystal structure.
