Da. Raval et al., CASTOR-OIL BASED POLYESTERAMIDE-AMINO RESIN SYSTEMS FOR INDUSTRIAL COATING APPLICATIONS, Journal of Scientific & Industrial Research, 55(4), 1996, pp. 263-267
Castor oil (Ricinus communis) has been used in the synthesis of polyes
teramide resins, suitable for surface coating applications. N,N-bis-(2
-hydroxyethyl) castor amides (HECA) have been prepared by aminolysis o
f castor oil with diethanolamine using zinc oxide as a catalyst. HECA
was reacted with two different dibasic acid compounds viz. phthalic an
hydride and isophthalic acid in varying molar ratios to obtain a serie
s of hydroxy terminated polyesteramides (HTPEA). Coating compositions
from these resins were prepared by incorporation of butylated melamine
formaldehyde (BMF) resin in two different ratios. The baked film prop
erties of these compositions have been studied. From the results, it a
ppears that polyesteramide resins prepared, using castor oil, which is
abundantly available at relatively low cost, can successfully he used
as a component of industrial baking finishes.
