S. Arnold et al., TREATMENT OF URINARY-INCONTINENCE IN BITCHES BY ENDOSCOPIC INJECTION OF GLUTARALDEHYDE CROSS-LINKED COLLAGEN, Journal of Small Animal Practice, 37(4), 1996, pp. 163-168
Thirty-two spayed bitches with urinary incontinence due to urethral sp
hincter incompetence, non-responsive to phenylpropanolamine administra
tion, were treated by urethral submucosal injection of glutaraldehyde
cross-linked, collagen. Urinary incontinence resolved after a single i
njection in 19 of the bitches. Additional medication with phenylpropan
olamine was necessary in five of these dogs, however. Of the 13 bitche
s that remained incontinent, the injections were repeated in nine. Thi
s resulted in a return to continence in five dogs, although two of the
se required additional medication for complete continence. The cure ra
te due to collagen injections alone is 53 per cent (17 of the 32 cases
). A total of 41 injections were performed and no postoperative compli
cations were observed.
