An alloy design model has been used to develop an austenitic stainless
steel containing 25-28 wt.% Cr, 22 wt.% Ni, 6 wt.% MII, 4-8 wt.% Mo,
and 0.6-0.9 wt.% N. The steel is produced by rapid-solidification po r
uder metallurgy with subsequent consolidation by hot isostatic pressin
g. The steel exhibits high yield strength and corrosion resistance, bo
th of which increase with increasing nitrogen content, yet high ductil
ity nod impact strength are maintained when properly annealed.
