The effects of hemodynamic changes on intraaortic balloon (IAB) volume
s were studied experimentally using a helium tachometer in a mock circ
ulatory system. The IAB volume decreased with increases in the heart r
ate and mean aortic pressure, but the degree of reduction in the IAB v
olume was different among 4 commercially available IAB drivers. Improv
ements in IAB consoles are needed to compliment the progress made in p
ercutaneous techniques for IAB insertion resulting in smaller balloons
.
