Fissidens appalachensis lander has been discovered in Pennsylvania, so
me 450 miles (720 kilometers) northeast of its previously known area o
f distribution in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. The s
pecies differs from F. bryoides Hedw. var. pusillus (Wilson) Pursell i
n Alien in its usually larger plants, longer and comparatively narrowe
r leaves, stronger limbidia, percurrent costae, and infrequently bistr
atose laminal cells.
