Mb. Moldwin et al., THE APPEARANCE OF PLASMASPHERIC PLASMA IN THE OUTER MAGNETOSPHERE IN ASSOCIATION WITH THE SUBSTORM GROWTH-PHASE, Geophysical research letters, 23(8), 1996, pp. 801-804
Short intervals (<2.5 hrs) of dense (greater than or equal to 10 cm(-3
)), cold (less than or equal to 10 eV) plasmaspheric plasma are observ
ed at synchronous orbit in association with the growth phase of geomag
netic substorms. We interpret the strong correlation between these phe
nomena in terms of the reconfiguration of the duskside/nightside magne
tosphere during the growth phase of geomagnetic substorms. This reconf
iguration moves plasmaspheric plasma outward to synchronous orbit, occ
asionally even in the midnight region.
