Abstract
The local instability view of ray chaos in underwater acoustics, as in troduced by J. Yan [J. Acoust. Sec. Am. 94, 2739-2745 (1993)], is show n to be false and misleading. A correct approach to understanding the physics of ray chaos is provided by the parametric instability view, i n which ray chaos is caused by resonances between ray periods in range and sound-speed perturbation wavelengths.
