The PYROEXPERT(R) optimization system was installed at the Leimen ceme
nt works for controlling and optimizing Lepol kiln III. Its introducti
on was based on a concept which builds on process instructions already
in use, i.e. PYROEXPERT(R) and the production controllers use the sam
e rules for managing the kiln. PYROEXPERT(R) reduced the NOx emissions
by about 15% and the SO2 emissions by about 11%. The number of emissi
on peaks based on half-hour average values was also reduced to about o
ne third of the original figure. When the ''maximum clinker production
'' strategy was selected the production throughput increased by 6% wit
h unchanged fuel and power consumption. The amount of underburnt mater
ial was also approximately halved. The proportion of time spent in aut
omatic operation was higher than 90%. Because of the favourable result
s the optimization system is also going to be installed during this ye
ar on two kilns and a cement mill.
