Double differential cross-sections for the production of binary encoun
ter electrons were measured for collisions of 30 MeV bare O8+ projecti
les with H-2, He, Ne, Ar, Kr and Xe targets at an electron ejection an
gle of theta = theta = 0 degrees with respect to the beam direction. R
esults were analyzed in terms of the impulse approximation (IA), in wh
ich target electrons in the projectile frame undergo 180 degrees Ruthe
rford scattering in the held of the bare projectile ion. Excellent agr
eement with the data was found for the H-2 and He targets, while for t
he multi-electron targets good agreement was established only when tar
get electrons whose velocities were lower than the projectile velocity
were included in the calculation.
