The gelation phenomenon induced by swift ions in macromolecular system
s is studied by Monte Carlo simulation. The simulation is based on a p
ercolation model which tries to take into account all chemical bonds p
roduced by the ion beam. The critical point of gelation and the gel fr
action as a function of the ion fluence is calculated with the paramet
ers of polystyrene in order to compare the results with experimental d
ata published earlier by Calcagno et al. [Phys. Rev. B 46 (1992) 10573
]. As a result of the comparison information about the structure of th
e macromolecular gel is obtained.
