The crystal structure of the one-dimensional complex [Cu(DCMB)(CA)](n)
, where DCMB=3,3'-dicarbomethoxy-2,2'-bipyridyl, CA=dianion of chloran
ilic acid, has been determined by X-ray diffraction at room temperatur
e. The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C2/
c (No.15), with a=13.633(2), b=12.773(3), c=12.722(6) Angstrom, beta=9
9.65(3)degrees and Z=4. The copper atoms are coordinated in a distorte
d octahedral arrangement by two nitrogen atoms of DCMB and four oxygen
atoms of the bridging, bis-chelating CA ligands. Thereby infinite 'zi
gzag' chains are formed consisting of Cu2+ and the chloranilate dianio
ns. The magnetic susceptibility of the compound has been investigated
between 280-4.2 K. The magnetic data are well reproduced using the exp
ression for isotropically coupled S=1/2 ions in antiferromagnetic chai
ns. The exchange coupling constant (2J) and the g value were estimated
to be -0.31(2) and 2.33(1) cm(-1), respectively.
