The results of an IR spectroscoic study of solutions of water in liqui
d hydrides of the group V and VI elements (PH3, AsH3, H2S, and H2Se) i
n the temperature range from T-b of hydride up to 290 K are presented.
The solubility of water in liquid SiH4 and GeH4 is lower than the det
ection limit of infrared spectroscopy. The spectral parameters of the
stretching and bending vibration bands of water are measured. The form
ation of weak hydrogen bonds between the molecules of water and hydrid
es takes place. To account for the shape of the stretching band of wat
er, 1:2 complexes with hydrides are postulated to be present in these
solutions. Their binding energy is estimated. Values of the Gutman don
or numbers of the hydrides in the liquid phase are given.
