T. Saito et al., A FAIR AND EFFICIENT BANDWIDTH ALLOCATION ALGORITHM FOR HIGH-SPEED LOCAL-AREA NETWORKS, Electronics & communications in Japan. Part 1, Communications, 79(5), 1996, pp. 66-75
With the advent of broadband integrated services digital network (B-IS
DN), there is the increasing need for high-speed multimedia systems al
so in the area of local area networks (LANs). It is obvious that the c
onventional systems such as CSMA/CD or token ring cannot cope with tho
se requirements. At present, several new access control methods are pr
oposed for slotted ring (or bus) LANs suited to transmission rates abo
ve 155 Mbps. This paper reviews the characteristics of those methods i
n a systematic way and proposes a new access control method called dis
tributed reset algorithm (DRA). DRA can provide high throughput while
maintaining the almost strict access fairness by using a new control c
alled ''access bit control'' in addition to the already known window c
ontrol.
