The IR and polarized Raman spectra of a single crystal RbAl(SO4)(2) .
12H(2)O is recorded and analyzed at room temperature. Bands indicate a
stronger S-O bond in RbAl(SO4)(2) . 12H(2)O than that in a free SO42-
ion, The fraction of reversed sulfate group in the Rb alum is much lo
wer than that in the potassium alum, Broad bands with frequencies cons
iderably shifted from the free state values indicate that water molecu
les form hydrogen bonds of various strengths, Two crystallographically
distinct water molecules are identified in the crystal. (C) 1996 Acad
