The production of the K4 polysaccharide was obtained for the first tim
e extracellularly from a strain of Escherichia coli. The set up of the
fermentation conditions led to the maximum fermentation yield, as ext
racellular K4, after 20 h. Purification and characterization of this K
4 resulted in 200 mg/L of highly purified K4.
