P. Vignaud et al., A NEW SKULL OF DIPLOCYNODON (CROCODYLOMOR PHA, ALLIGATORIDAE) - EARLYOLIGOCENE OF THE AQUITAIN BASIN (DORDOGNE, FRANCE), Comptes rendus de l'Academie des sciences. Serie II. Sciences de la terre et des planetes, 322(7), 1996, pp. 595-601
The remains of a crocodile (referred to Diplocynodon cf. hantoniensis)
from the Tertiary of Razac d'Eymet (Dordogne, Aquitain Basin) are des
cribed. This specimen allows us to discuss the systematics of the genu
s Diplocynodon. The associated mammals indicate a stratigraphic level
situated at the basal Early Oligocene (between MP21 and MP22). The dia
gnostic characters of the genus Diplocynodon and of the species (sensu
Buscalioni et al., 1992) of this genus are discussed. The skull from
Razac d'Eymet displays both the characteristics of Diplocynodon and th
e species D. hantoniensis. This species must therefore be considered a
s a Diplocynodon species.
